Hub for Good

Meet Margaret. Margaret Haines is a Carleton alumna and retiree who had an incredible impact on the Carleton community during her eight years as university librarian, and continues to support the Carleton community as a member of the executive committee of the Carleton University Retirees Association (CURA).

As I live alone, I have been extremely grateful for all the messages and calls from friends checking up to see if I am okay. While I have not felt at all lonely or worried or ill, it made me realize that if my friends worried about me — a single older lady who lives alone — then I should also be concerned about other friends in the same situation. Now I make a call to at least one of them every day. I am really missing my aquafit and exercise classes. I especially miss a group of aquafit friends, whom I call the Crazy 8’s, as they are all feisty and fun. We keep in touch every day by texts, and share jokes and cartoons and silly anecdotes about our activities. I look forward to these every morning and always have a good laugh. It’s a great way to start a day in self-isolation!
